HIGHLAND HEIGHTS, Ky. - With a 2-1 win over Northern Kentucky on Tuesday (Nov. 3), the Purdue Fort Wayne men's soccer team secured the No. 2 seed for the upcoming Horizon League Championship.
Purdue Fort Wayne will await the highest remaining seed from the opening round of the championship. The Mastodons will host that contest on Wednesday, November 11 at 4 p.m. at the Hefner Soccer Complex. Tickets for that game can be purchased now.
The Mastodons were just moments away from a regular season title. Needing three results to go their way in the regular season finales across the league, the Mastodons got two of them, but Milwaukee scored in the final four minutes of their rivalry game with Green Bay to claim the regular season title.
The 'Dons finished with 18 points in league play, their most since joining the Horizon League in 2020. It is also the second year in a row that the Mastodons finished runners-up in the regular season.
It took less than 35 minutes of game action for the Mastodons to break open the scoring against the Norse on Tuesday afternoon. Christian Agyekum and Finnegan Railey found Brandon Razo inside the box to score. He knocked in his seventh goal of the season to break up the nil-nil score. Railey's assist was the first point of his Mastodon career, and Agyekum's was his third of the season.
Northern Kentucky found an equalizer in minute 71, but the Mastodons had the answer 101 seconds later. Jonny Hernandez sent a corner kick into the box and found Karsten Ternes to score the go-ahead and eventual game-winning goal. It was Ternes' second goal of the season and Hernandez's second assist of the season.
Purdue Fort Wayne led in shots 15-11 and corner kicks 8-4. The Mastodons held NKU to just two shots on goal.
With the victory, the Mastodons improved to 7-4-3 with a 5-2-3 in Horizon League play. Northern Kentucky fell to 1-13-3, 1-7-2 in the HL and saw its season come to a close.
The Mastodons will return home to host the semifinal of the #HLMSOC Championship on Wednesday (Nov. 11).
