FORT WAYNE, Ind. – 702 students from J.E. Ober Elementary School in Garrett, Indiana visited Purdue Fort Wayne on March 16-17 to receive a track and field throws demonstration by Miss Trunchbull from the Roald Dahl book Matilda. Well, kinda.
Students arrived on buses on Monday and Tuesday and filled the bleachers of the Lutheran Health Fieldhouse. They were not treated to chocolate cake. Instead Purdue Fort Wayne throws coach Sean Magnuson, dressed as Miss Trunchbull, taught the elementary school students about the shot put, discus, javelin, hammer and weight throw. Mastodon student-athletes demonstrated each throw for the kids. The 30-minute session was capped with Miss Trunchbull herself taking a turn. Have no fear, no children were thrown by their pigtails in the demonstration.
Students then checked out the throws equipment and met Mastodon student-athletes.
