Women's Golf Beats Detroit Mercy, Ties UIC at Midwest Match Play

JACKSON, Mich. - Purdue Fort Wayne women's golf picked up a win over Detroit Mercy and a tie against UIC on Monday (Aug. 31) at the Midwest Match Play despite very wet conditions.
Purdue Fort Wayne 3.5, Detroit Mercy 2.5
Lillian Gottman halved with Gabriella Tapp, coming back from 2-down on 14. She won holes 15 and 16 and split the last two.
Lillie Cone, Emily Gottman and Hunar Mittal all won their matches 2-up. Cone beat UIC's Josephine Zangrilli, who subbed into Detroit Mercy's lineup. She never trailed in the match, going 1-up on the second hole, then working her way to 3-up by hole 11. Gottman played from behind for the majority of the day, going 1-down one hole one. She went all square on holes six and nine, then went 1-up on 10. Her foe, Kassandra Rombouts, won 12 and 13 to go 1-up, then Gottman won the last three holes of the day to win 2-up. Mittal also never trailed in her match, winning six holes over the course of the round.
Amaya Wade fell to Morgan Jones 2&1 despite picking up two holes on the back nine. Louise Ekesall fell to Sadie Kondel 3&2. She also won two holes on the back nine, but Kondel picked up three to secure the point for Detroit Mercy.
Purdue Fort Wayne 3, UIC 3
The evening round was broken up by a thunderstorm, but the highlight of the day came as the sun was setting. Down one hole, Wade went into the 18th hole needing a win to give the Mastodons the draw. She hit an absolute dart on her second shot to a foot while her opponent went greenside. Wade converted her putt to half the round.
Cone needed a win on her final hole to half with her opponent too after dropping 16 and 17. She made the green in regulation and two-putted for par, but that was enough to half with Alejandra Ereno.
Emily Gottman and Mittal dominated their matchup, winning 6&4 and 6&5, respectively. After splitting the first three holes, Gottman won seven of the next 11 holes, including five of the last six to take the match. Mittal started hot, claiming four holes in a row. From there, she won four more, including her last two.
Lillian Gottman fell to Camille Rosier 3&2 and Ekesall fell to Rowan Pies 2&1.
The Mastodons will face off against Southern Indiana on Tuesday (Sept. 1) with a chance to claim the first Midwest Match Play trophy.
