PADUCAH, Ky. - Louise Ekesall and Emily Gottman both turned in two-round totals of 152 on the opening day of The Velvet Classic on Monday (Sept. 14) to lead the Purdue Fort Wayne women's golf team in the Mastodons' first stroke play event of the season.
Ekesall shot 79-73-152, turning in nothing worse than a bogey in the first round. She birdied holes five and nine, adding seven pars along the way. In the afternoon round, she was very steady, finding three birdies and 13 pars on her second time through. She birdied holes one, eight and 17, the first of which was a 462-yard par-5.
Gottman shot 75-77-152 with bogeys or better the entire day. She birdied holes nine and 14 in round one, leading to an even first 15 holes. In round two, the sophomore went back-to-back with birdies on 16 and 17, helping her remain even over the last 10 holes. Gottman and Ekesall are both tied for 24th.
Three shots back of Ekesall and Gottman, Hunar Mittal shot 80-75-155 and is 37th with 18 to play. She started the day with four pars in a row. After an uneven back nine that was highlighted by a birdie on the 327-yard 15th, she parred five of her last six. The afternoon round was much calmer, as the former First Team All-Horizon Leaguer turned in 13 pars and a birdie on 16.
Lillian Gottman shot 83-79-163. She had 10 pars in both rounds with a birdie on hole 11 to highlight the second. She ended her day with three pars in a row.
In the first stroke play event of her career, freshman Amaya Wade shot 85-81-166. The brightest spot of her day was a birdie deuce on hole six. She strung together 17 pars, with 10 in round two.
Lillie Cone played as an individual, shooting 86-91-177. She birdied holes one and eight on her first trip through the course.
As a group, the Mastodons shot 317-304-621, which leaves them in 10th place with 18 holes left in the event. West Georgia leads the field at 591.
The final round of The Velvet Classic will fire off on Tuesday morning (Sept. 15).
