Mastodon Athletics Kicks Off Golden Season Celebration

FORT WAYNE, Ind. - The 2026-27 academic year is the 50th season of membership in the NCAA for the IPFW/Purdue Fort Wayne Mastodons.
Whether the student-athletes wore crimson and gold, blue and white, or black and gold, every Mastodon paved the way to this point to celebrate the Golden Season.
Over the next 50 weeks, Purdue Fort Wayne Athletics will have 50 pieces of content specifically designed to highlight items from the last 50 years of NCAA membership, covering a wide variety of feature content. The very first? Fittingly, an article from the IPFW Communicator, the school newspaper, announcing IPFW's acceptance into NCAA Division III.
When they officially joined Division III, the Mastodons sponsored men's and women's basketball, men's golf, men's tennis, women's volleyball, men's track, men's and women's cross country, men's soccer, baseball, softball and men's hockey. In 1976, the Gates Sports Center had not yet been built, so the Mastodon basketball programs called the Concordia College gymnasium (now Concordia Theological Seminary)Â home.
The Mastodons moved into Division II ahead of the 1982-83 season and into Division I prior to the 2001-02 season.
