David Fern
- Title:
- Fall Head Coach
Washington State University graduate David Fern has been named the new head men's golf coach at IPFW. Fern, the Cougars' scoring average leader in 2004-05, becomes just the second men's golf coach since 2003-04, the year the department announced the continuation of a previously dormant program.
"We are very excited to bring in a coach with David's experience and enthusiasm," said IPFW Director of Athletics Tommy Bell. "David proved during the interview process to having the excitement and knowledge to take the men's program to another level."
Fern, who earned a bachelors degree in sports management in 2007, continues to golf competitively following his collegiate career, and has recently tied the course record at the Spokane Country Club with a 61, tying former PGA professional Tom Watson for the achievement.
He was the Cougars' top golfer in eight of the 11 tournaments played before the Pac-10 Championships in 2004-05. Among those tournaments includes an overall first place finish at the Inland Collegiate, and back-to-back tournaments of which he shot under par - a 2-under par score at the two-round Wolfpack Invitational and an 8-under total at the three-round Aztec Invitational. Fern's senior year at WSU was not able to come into its full fruition due to a bout with mononucleosis.
Fern opened his collegiate career at Pepperdine, playing his first two collegiate seasons with the Waves. In the summer prior to starting at WSU, he won the 103rd Pacific Northwest Amateur Championship, where he won the title 4 and 2 in the final round of the match-play tournament at Overlake Golf and Country Club. He followed that performance by qualifying for the 2004 U.S. Amateur Championship by firing a two-round total of 134 (-10) in the Woodburn, Oregon, qualifier.
As a prep golfer, Fern was the Washington Class 4A (largest class) Individual State Champion as a junior in 2000. He lettered four years at Mead High School, and was the team captain in each of his last three seasons. He was named to the All-Greater Spokane League First Team as a freshman, junior and senior and placed 14th in the individual state tournament as a freshman. During his sophomore year he finished seventh at the state meet and followed that with his championship as a junior. He capped his high school career by taking eighth at the state meet as a senior, helping his team to an overall third place finish.
Fern also spent two years with the Gonzaga athletic department, as he worked with numerous facets of the program of which included; helped with the preparation and management of weekly events for the department; the recruitment, organization and training of volunteers for events; assisted in fund raising for the department; and hosted Bulldog Club events, honoring donors.
