Akilah Sims joined the Purdue Fort Wayne women's basketball program as an assistant coach in November of 2018.
Sims' teams at Purdue Fort Wayne have been known for their academic success, as in 2019-20, her team had the highest GPA in the department, with a 3.59 GPA in the fall semester. Each of the 12 student-athletes on the team had over a 3.0. Under her advisement, Anna Lappenküper became a Purdue Fort Wayne Exemplar Student in 2019-20, one of just nine in the university.
Sims coached De'Jour Young for her final season, as Young became a 1,000-point scorer. Sims also coached one of the most elite shot-blockers and rebounders in program history. Sh'Toya Sanders averaged 1.9 blocks per contest in her two years in Fort Wayne after transferring from Chicago State. In just two seasons, Sanders was second on the all-time blocks list with 89, and her 1.9 per game is first in program history. She averaged 8.1 rebounds per game, which is the most by a Mastodon in the Division I era, and third-most overall.
She joined the Mastodons after spending the two years playing overseas for Peli-Karhut of the Finnish Korisliiga Women’s League. Sims led her team to the 2018 league championship after averaging 18.2 points and 9.7 rebounds in 37 games. Both years she was named to the league’s first team, as well as to the All-Imports Team. In 2017, she was named the league’s Rookie of the Year.
Sims graduated from Horizon League rival IUPUI in 2016 with a degree in kinesiology and a minor in health education. She capped off her four-year career with the Jaguars scoring 1,102 points, which was 16th all-time in program history. She was a three-time Summit League Player of the Week, and was named to the All-Summit League Second Team in 2014-15.
Sims is a native of Fort Wayne where she graduated in 2012 from Snider High School. She was rated the No. 24 player at her position by ESPN HoopGurlz and was a Hoosier Basketball Magazine Top 60 Senior. Sims was an IBCA All-State Senior First-Team selection and a second-team AP Indiana All-State selection. She was also awarded the 2012 Tiffany Gooden Award. Sims was selected to play in the Indiana/Kentucky All-Star Game.
