Aaron Johnson came to Purdue Fort Wayne in 2016 as a graduate assistant in the athletic media services office. He received his master's degree in professional communication in 2018 with a 4.0 in the program. He was promoted to be the Assistant Director of Athletic Media Services in July 2019. He now serves as the primary SID contact for women's volleyball, women's basketball, softball, women's golf, men's golf. When he was a graduate assistant, he was the contact for women's soccer and the AVCA Top 15 men's volleyball program.
Johnson is responsible for overseeing a staff of student workers, graduate assistants and game day employees to ensure proper execution of media relations and game day tasks.
Johnson is an award-winning SID for the Mastodons. He won the Fred Stabley Sr. Writing Contest for District 5 in 2022 for his historical feature on the 40-year history of the men's volleyball program and was a runner-up in two categories in 2023. His story about the 2022 women's soccer season that resulted in Horizon League Goalkeeper of the Year and Coach of the Year awards was runner-up in the event coverage category, and his feature on the women's basketball team's growth under head coach Maria Marchesano was runner-up in the season recap category. His story on the men's golf team's performance in their first NCAA regional was a also runner-up in District 5 for event coverage. Behind his lead, the media services office also won the men's category for the AVCA Grant Burger Media Award in 2021 for their coverage of the 40th anniversary of the men's volleyball program.
While at Purdue Fort Wayne, Johnson has had various notable experiences, including serving as the talent statistics coordinator for the Big Ten Network in Purdue Fort Wayne's 71-68 men's basketball overtime victory over Indiana in 2016. He assisted in two rebranding efforts and an overhaul in soccer, baseball and softball streaming, upgrading from a single camera to a multi-camera setup capable of ESPN-quality broadcasts.
The Mastodon men's golf team made its first NCAA Regional appearance with Johnson as its SID. He traveled to Bath, Michigan with the team to cover its first berth after winning the Horizon League Championship.
While with women's volleyball, the team earned a berth to the 2019 NIVC, which was the first postseason tournament beyond a conference tournament that the Mastodons competed in since 2012.
During his time with the men's volleyball team, the Mastodons earned an AVCA Top-15 ranking in 2018, and beat No. 3 UC Irvine on the Anteaters' home floor. Johnson coordinated with national and local media in the aftermath of that contest for interviews with student-athletes. The 2018 men's volleyball team started the season 8-0, which was a program-best.
Additionally, Johnson is the sports information director for the Midwestern Intercollegiate Volleyball Association, a role which he took on beginning in the 2020 men's volleyball season.
Johnson graduated from Indiana University in 2016 with a degree in Sport Communication. In his time there, he was a broadcaster for the Big Ten Network Student U program from 2014-16. Highlights of his broadcasting career included the 2015 edition of Purdue Fort Wayne men's basketball at Indiana, and the NCAA men's soccer tournament second round matchup of Indiana vs. Connecticut in 2014. He also joined the Indiana baseball team as a broadcaster on iuhoosiers.com, traveling with the Hoosiers for several road contests and home events. He was also the sports editor for the Indiana Arbutus Yearbook in 2015-16 and a contributing writer for several media outlets in Bloomington, Indiana. Additionally, he was a contributing writer and photographer to his home county's newspaper (The Paper of Wabash County, Inc.) in 2014.
During the summers from 2015-2019, Johnson worked as a cabin counselor for the Woodcraft Camp as a part of the Culver Summer Schools and Camps in Culver, Indiana. He taught children ages 9-14 in a variety of class subjects, including newspaper design, golf, ping-pong, softball, and military leadership. He also served as a content creator for the Woodcraft Camp's social media platforms and website. In 2021-23, Johnson assumed the role of athletic director for the Woodcraft camp. His primary responsibilities included scheduling games and compiling results for the weekly awards ceremonies.
