Fort Wayne, IN - The task at hand for the IPFW women's soccer team was to host the Valparaiso Crusaders, owner's of a 10-2-0 record and first place in the Mid-Continent Conference. The Mastodons were up to the task, stopping Valpo, 1-0.
In a very physical contest, both teams played to a tight, scoreless first half.
Valpo and IPFW each fired off six shots in the opening stanza, while Valpo goal keeper Erin Murray and IPFW netminder Shannon Lynn turned back three shots on goal apiece.
The only scoring of the contest came in the 65th minute of play.
After Valpo was assessed a yellow card, IPFW set up a free kick from about 28 yards out.
Junior forward Anika Apar sent the free kick on goal. Murray made the initial stop, but defender Jenna Tulley was right on the door step to bang home the rebound.
Valpo put on the pressure late, but Lynn stopped three more Crusader shots to preserve the win. It was her third shutout of the season.
Murray, who played well in net for Valpo, turned aside seven IPFW shots.
The Mastodons (3-7-0) will return to action on Sunday afternoon, hosting IUPUI at 3pm.
The IPFW men will play the first half of the doubleheader, hosting Valparaiso at 1pm.
