Washington, DC - The 2005 United Soccer Conference Champion IPFW Mastodons survived a huge test from Longwood University, in the opening round of the 2006 USC Tournament, tonight in Washington, D.C.
Tied at 1-1 after 90-minutes of regulation, the contest couldn't decide in the two extra OT sessions, so the match went to penalty kicks, with IPFW advancing 4-3.
Longwood managed the only goal in the first half as Tiffany Crane one-timed a feed from Kaylan Mahon past IPFW keeper Shannon Lynn.
The 'Dons tied the match in the second half on a blast by senior midfielder Nicole Halls. Halls ripped a shot from about 40 yards out that found the upper right corner of the net.
Following the OT sessions both teams lined up for penalty kicks.
Three rounds of the shootout were dead even with Anika Apar, Nicole Halls, and Jenna Tulley scoring for IPFW and Kaylyn Mahon, Kristina Reed, and Anna Gravely finding the back of the net for the Lancers.
After a save each by IPFW keeper Shannon Lynn and Lancer netminder Anne Whitmore, Longwood's fifth attempt from Tiffany Crane hit the crossbar, setting up a chance for the Mastodons.
Freshman defender Danielle Luther stepped up and knocked home the game-winner.
IPFW will now face North Dakota State in Friday's Semi-Final match at 4pm.
The Bison topped IPFW, 1-0 on October 15 in Fargo, North Dakota.
