
'Dons Take Down Owls at Carolina First Classic

Asheville, NC - The Mastodons headed down to UNC Asheville to face the Kennesaw State Owls in the Carolina First Classic. IPFW moves to 2-0 with a 77-74 win over the Owls.
It was a back-and-forth battle to start the game before the 'Dons took off to a five point lead after a layup by Nanyamka Moore at 16:51. IPFW took it to a double-digit difference just a few minutes later when a 3-pointer by Tina Moen gave them a 10 point lead, 17-7.
IPFW would continue to hold onto a good lead throughout the first half, taking it to 18 points with just under nine minutes left to go, 32-14. They would finish out the half with a 12 point lead, 42-30.
The Owls knocked down a 3-pointer in the first 18 seconds of the second half to take the 'Dons lead to nine. But a 10-6 run for the Mastodons would take their lead back to 13 after Johnna Lewis-Carlisle hit one from beyond the arc at 16:20.
Kennesaw State beefed up their offense and slowly began to chip away at IPFW's lead, taking it down to three points at 12:11, 55-52. Free throws would be key at this point as the 'Dons connect on five to take their lead back to eight.
The Owls took their first lead of the second half with 3:26 left in the game. Ashley Johnson took that lead right back from the Owls after her layup.
The game would be all tied up with 47 seconds left at 74. Free throw shots would once again give the 'Dons the edge, as they connected on three of their next four for the win, 77-74.
Samantha Edwards and Johnson led the 'Dons on the offense with 14 points each. Johnson was perfect at the line, 8-8 while Edwards connected for 8 of her 10 freebies.
Edwards and Lewis-Carlisle led in steals with four each.
Moen connected for 11 points in her first game of the season. Juliane Höhne had 10 points and led the 'Dons with five boards.
The 'Dons were 29-34 at the line and had 18 steals compared to the Owls who were 9-14 from the line with seven steals.
Kennesaw State was led by Rosetta Hollis with 18 points. Jade Robinson chipped in 11 and Ashley Johnson had ten.
The Mastodons will face host UNC Asheville in the Championship game, Saturday afternoon at 3 PM in the Justice Center. IPFW's next home game is December 2nd versus the Central Michigan Chippewas in the Gates Center. Game time is 2 PM.
