
Stovall's Career Day Leads Ball State past IPFW

Muncie, IN - Red shirt senior Peyton Stovall scored a career-high 37 points as Ball State won for the first time in 2007-08, with a 69-62 victory over visiting IPFW on Monday afternoon at Worthen Arena.
Fourteen of Stovall's 37 points came from the foul line as the Cardinals enjoyed a 26-34 afternoon at the charity stripe. IPFW shot just 13 foul shots, making 13.
Ball State jumped out to an early lead on the strength of eight early points from junior forward Anthony Newell.
The Cardinals went up by 13 on a nice alley-oop dunk from junior guard Ron Giles that made it 31-18 late in the first half.
A pair of Stovall free-throws pushed the Cardinal cushion to 35-20 at the break.
In the second half, the Mastodons were able to cut the Cardinal lead back to 10 on a triple from freshman guard Zach Plackemeier.
And, on a 3-pointer by red shirt junior forward David Carson, the `Dons pulled to within five, 58-53, with just over five minutes remaining.
A triple from junior guard Jakari Johnson, with just 1:10 left cut the BSU lead to just 65-62, but the `Dons would not score again the rest of the game.
Stovall was 10-16 from the floor, 3-4 from behind the arc, and 14-17 from the foul line for his 37-point effort.
Newell was the only other Cardinal in double-figures with 18 points.
David Carson also had a career-day in an IPFW uniform. Carson finished with 17 points. He was the only Mastodon in double digits.
Senior forward Jaraun Burrows and Jakari Johnson each chipped in eight points in the loss. Burrows also had eight rebounds.
For the game, IPFW, which shot just 30.8% in the opening half, hit for 53.8% in the second session, and finished the game shooting 42.3%.
Ball State (1-11) shot 41.7% in the contest, and outrebounded IPFW, 31-28.
IPFW (5-8, 2-0 Summit League) finishes the non-conference portion of its schedule winless on the road in seven tries.
They will hit the road for a pair of Summit League contest this week (1/3 @ North Dakota State and 1/5 @ South Dakota State) before coming back to Fort Wayne to host Oral Roberts on January 10.
