Fort Wayne, IN - The Mastodons set a Division I record for the program with their 10th win of the season Thursday night at the Gates Center. The 'Dons defeated the Lady Broncs of Texas-Pan American 58-41, holding UTPA to 10 points in the second half.
"It feels good [winning 10th game]." said Chris Paul. "Knowing where we were 365 days ago at 2-18 and falling to 2-20 before winning five of our last six to finish the year. Being at 10-10 in February, were not satisfied, but with 9 to go, I'm pleased with our progress."
The Mastodons ran out to an 8-0 lead to start the game. UTPA answered back, tying the game at the 15:55 mark. The Lady Broncs held the Mastodons for the next two minutes before taking their only lead of the half. IPFW rallied from there, taking a five point lead into the half, 36-31.
IPFW started the second with a 12-1 run, taking a 16 point lead at the 11:29 mark. The Mastodons would take their largest lead of the game at the 4:48 mark. Johnna Lewis-Carlisle hit a three-pointer to make it a 20 point game. The 'Dons would hold on from there, defeating UTPA by seventeen, 58-41.
"We defended well except for a short stretch in the first half when we let Vaughn hit four 3's. At halftime we challenged them to defend and get it on the glass and they executed the game plan.
"We won even when we didn't shoot well. But most importantly, we asked them to do certain things and they did that. It was a great effort all around with contributions from everyone and minutes being shared."
Lewis-Carlisle led the 'Dons with 12 points. She pulled down four boards with four assists and three steals.
Ashley Johnson just missed double-digits with nine points. She was perfect at the line, 3-3 with five assists and steals.
Samantha Edwards hit 3 of 6 from the field for eight points. Edwards led defensively at the glass with nine boards.
The Lady Broncs were led by Tamara Vaughn with 14 points. LeKeisha Gray added nine points. MaHogany Daniel pulled down 11 boards.
The Mastodons (10-10) will host Utah Valley State on Saturday at 1 PM in the Gates Center.
