Fort Wayne, IN - The Mastodons made it a 2-1 week and improved to 11-10 after defeating fellow Independent Utah Valley State 82-70 Saturday afternoon in the Gates Center. Johnna Lewis-Carlisle broke the 1,000 career point mark as well in the game after scoring 24 points.
"We had a good team effort today," said Chris Paul. "People will look at the stats and think that it was all Johnson and Lewis-Carlisle and they had a good game, but we are very pleased with the contributions from a lot of people, Lieselot Malfait, Samantha Edwards, Hannah Thieke and Tina Moen to name a few."
After a 5-0 run by the Wolverines to start the game the Mastodons rallied back to tie the game at 6 at 16:59. It was a back-and-forth battle from there with four more ties before the 'Dons began to make a run.
IPFW would take a four point lead at the 7:57 mark, 25-21 but UVSC came back to tie the game up for a sixth time. IPFW finally got it going, taking a 10 point lead with 1:35 to go in the half.
IPFW would take a 12 point lead into halftime, 44-32.
The Mastodons would continue to dominate, taking a 16 point lead with 15:42 to go, 56-40. They would hold onto a double-digit lead for the next six minutes before Utah Valley State would take them momentarily to a single digit lead at the 9:59 mark, 58-49.
The Wolverines were not going down without a fight, continuing to try to cut into IPFW's lead. The 'Dons wouldn't have it, carrying a 12 point lead at the end, 82-70.
"UVSC is a good team and we knew we'd have our hands full. They have played a tough schedule this year. Even with the 12 point lead at half, we told them that UVSC would fire back and to not discount Fairbanks. In the second half UVSC kept feeding Fairbanks and we couldn't stop them.
"They crept back, but our kids figured out how to win. They weren't rattled when things weren't going their way and they kept their composure. When we needed a stop or a big bucket it happened."
Lewis-Carlisle led the 'Dons on scoring with 24 points. She was 4 of 8 from the arc and 6 of 10 from the line. Lewis-Carlisle also was strong on the defense, pulling down eight boards and two steals and had four assists.
Ashley Johnson finished with 19 points. She was 5 of 10 from the field and perfect at the line, 9-9. She added seven boards and two steals.
Hannah Thieke came off the bench adding nine points in 19 minutes.
The Wolverines were led by Robyn Fairbanks who broke the 1,000 point mark as well with 22 points for the afternoon. Julie McMurray also had 22 points for UVSC.
The Mastodons will now head to the Dakotas for a two game stretch before heading home on February 14th to face NJIT. The 'Dons previously defeated NJIT 81-70 in Newark. Game time on the 14th is 7 PM in the Gates Center.
