Knoxville, TN-The University of Tennessee swept a twin-bill with IPFW today at Lindsay Nelson Stadium. The Vols topped IPFW 11-1 in game one and 9-1 in the nightcap.
Tennessee (6-5) got a pair of runs in the third innings and added a single run in the fifth inning as shortstop Tony Delmonico homered to left field.
The Volunteers broke the game open with four runs in the seventh and three in the eighth.
IPFW got its lone run of the game in the 9th inning on an RBI double by centerfielder Jared Davis.
In the nightcap, the Volunteers put up five runs in the opening frame, two coming on a double from freshman catcher Yan Gomes.
Tennessee added three more in the 4th inning as junior DH Shawn Griffin homered to right field.
The Mastodons (0-6) broke up the shutout the hard way in the 5th inning as sophomore pitcher Ryan Simpson sandwiched three hit batsmen around a single by freshman third baseman Jason Doerffler. Senior catcher Tony Nichting was the last 'Don plunked by Simpson, and that pushed senior shortstop Chris Venvertloh across the plate with the 'Dons only run.
The Mastodons, who were outscored 26-3 in the series, will head south now for spring trip action at the IMG Academy in Bradenton Florida.
IPFW will open up play with a doubleheader against Northeastern on March 3.
