Martin, TN - The IPFW baseball team is getting closer to putting it all together. The young Mastodons dropped a doubleheader today at UT-Martin by the scores of 4-1, and 5-2.
With a roster that features 14 players in the freshman and sophomore class, IPFW has struggled to find its way so far in 2007, and the growing pains continued today.
Today at UT-Martin, the Mastodons sent junior starter Cole Uebelhor to the hill in Game 1, but the Skyhawks got to him in the first inning. UT-Martin, like IPFW, likes to play percentage baseball, and the 'Hawks got their first run on a safety squeeze by shortstop Lanc Renton.
UT-Martin got a pair in the second on an RBI double from left fielder Blake Turner and a run-scoring single from second baseman Chad Green.
The Skyhawks added a single run in the 5th inning to take a 4-0 lead.
IPFW broke through in the top of the 6th inning, taking advantage of some sloppy UTM play. After a single from freshman Ryan Beer, sophomore catcher Adam Miller brought him home as his grounder to second was misplayed. It would be the only run for IPFW in the game.
In the nightcap, the 'Dons (2-16) jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second on an RBI sacrifice fly by sophomore left fielder Quentin Brown.
IPFW made it 2-0 in the third. Junior first baseman Nick Millspaugh started off the inning with double down the left field line. Playing "small-ball", senior shortstop Chris Venvertloh bunted Millspaugh over to third base. The move worked perfectly, as freshman second baseman Mark Carden chased Millspaugh home with an RBI single to right.
UT-Martin got one back in the third, and tied the game in the fourth on a sac-fly by left fielder Kevin Holt that plated DH Jason Hockaday, who had doubled to lead off the inning.
The Skyhawks (6-10) broke it open with three in the 6th inning. The game-winner was an RBI single by first baseman Scot McLean who finished the game 3 for 3.
IPFW starter Donnie Sixt had another strong outing, but didn't figure in the decision. Sixt tossed four complete, giving up two runs, both earned, on eight hits. He struck out four while walking only two.
Freshman reliever Matt Antos was tagged with the loss.
UTM sophomore starter Eric Walker settled down after the first three innings and got the win, going seven complete, giving up two runs, one earned, on six hits. He struck out two and walked two.
The two squads will finish up the weekend series tomorrow with a single nine-inning game. The start time has been moved up to Noon from 1pm.
