University Park, PA - No. 6 Penn State and No. 11 IPFW slugged it out on Saturday night at Alumni Gym, and in the end, it was the Nittany Lions coming out on top, 3-2.
In a rematch from earlier this season, it was the Nittany Lions turning the tables on the Mastodons by the scores of 30-20, 30-32, 30-23, 25-30, and 15-13.
The fifth set was tied at 12-all until Alex Gutor put down a pair of kills to seal the deal for the Nittany Lions.
Gutor was one of four Lions to hit for double figures with 13 kills. He completed his double-double with 11 digs.
Matt Anderson led all scorers in the match with 24 kills.
IPFW also posted four double-digit kill swingers with juniors Jason Yhost and C.J. Macias each pounding out 16.
Junior middle Josh Stewart and junior opposite Brock Ullrich recorded 13 and 12 kills, respectively.
Penn State (14-5) beat IPFW at its own game, out-blocking the 'Dons 15.5 to 9.0.
However, IPFW (13-7) may have found something as they head into the final conference portion of the year. Yhost and Ullrich have been a tremendous compliment to Macias from the left side, something that may be huge for the 'Dons as they attempt to win the MIVA and return to the NCAA Championships.
The Mastodons will return to MIVA action this upcoming weekend, hosting Mercyhurst and Quincy at the Gates Center. Both match times are 7pm.
