Ann Arbor, MI - The Michigan Wolverines used a six-run 3rd inning and a rain shower to top IPFW on Tuesday afternoon, at Ray Fisher Stadium, 10-2.
Michigan left fielder Brad Robbin got the Wolverines going in the first. Robbin singled, stole second and third, and scored on a sacrifice fly by designated hitter Zach Putnam.
In the 3rd inning, the Wolverines parlayed a pair of doubles and an IPFW error into six runs and a 7-0 lead.
Trailing 8-0 in the 6th inning, IPFW got two back on a two-run shot by freshman left fielder Shaun VanDriessche. VanDriessche's blast was his first career collegiate homer.
Junior first baseman Nick Millspaugh, who doubled earlier in the inning, came around to score on the VanDriessche dinger.
But, just as IPFW began to grab a little momentum, the Wolverines and the weather stole it right back.
In the bottom of the sixth, Michigan pinch-hitter Derek VanBuskirk launched a two-run bomb of his own out to left, making it 10-2.
An inning later, the skies opened up, and the game was called.
IPFW starter Stacy Herrold (1-4) took the loss. He gave up seven runs, on eight hits, over 2 1/3 innings.
Michigan starter Eric Katzman evened his record at 1-1, striking out five while limiting the 'Dons to just three hits over four complete.
With the win, the Wolverines improve to 11-6. IPFW falls to 4-19.
The Mastodons return to action, tomorrow afternoon, traveling to Indianapolis to take on Butler at 2pm.
