Shreveport, LA - The IPFW baseball team played another pair of road games today at Centenary College. The 'Dons, who have only played at home once in 25 games, dropped a doubleheader to the Gents by the scores of 13-7 and 13-1.
The opening frame of the first game looked like the Mastodons were going to have a good day. IPFW scored three times on an RBI single by left fielder Quentin Brown and a two-run single by junior first baseman Nick Millspaugh.
The Gents, however, would answer with four runs of their own in the bottom of the second on a two-run double by Teddy Saenz, a wild pitch, and a ground out.
Centenary (12-16) added three more in the 3rd inning.
Two of those runs came off of an RBI single to left by left fielder Calvin Sanchez.
The 'Dons would battle back and tie the game with four of their own in the 4th inning.
Freshman second baseman Mark Carden chased home two runs with a single to right field.
Center fielder Jared Davis plated another run with an RBI double to left, and right fielder Nick Diem hit a seeing-eye single through the right side, tying it at 7-all.
Unfortunately for IPFW, Centenary got a single run in the 6th, two in the 7th, and three in the 8th to coast to the 13-7 win.
Freshman reliever Brett Merkley took the loss, giving up four runs on five hits in just an inning of work.
Gent's reliever Peter Stark got the win, tossing 1 1/3 innings of one-hit ball.
IPFW struck first in the night cap on an RBI fielder's choice off of the bat of catcher Tony Nichting, but it was all Centenary from that point on.
The Gents scored 13 unanswered runs to cruise to the win.
IPFW starter Donnie Sixt gave up nine runs (five earned) on nine hits, over five complete for the loss.
Centenary junior starter Jeremy Sheehan tossed seven complete. He gave up just the 1st inning run on five IPFW hits.
The two teams will meet for another doubleheader Saturday afternoon beginning at noon.
