
Mastodons Go 2-1 at Clarion Classic

Kalamazoo, MI - The IPFW Mastodons wrapped up the Clarion Classic going 1-1 on Saturday, defeating Eastern Kentucky in three and falling to host Western Michigan in four.
Jessica Miller and Mayara Schlindwein were named to the All-Tournament Team for IPFW.
IPFW v. Eastern Kentucky
The Mastodons opened up day two of the Clarion Classic hosted by Western Michigan with an afternoon match against Eastern Kentucky. The 'Dons took the match from the Colonels, 3-0 (30-22, 30-26, 30-26).
Game one started off with the 'Dons taking a four point lead at 7-3 after a kill by Jessica Miller. An attack error by EKU would open IPFW's lead to five, before the Colonels cut it back to four, 8-4. IPFW continued to open up their lead, taking it to a seven point difference, 14-7. Miller and Rebekah Roehm tallied back-to-back kills to open the lead to 11, 25-16. The Colonels would go on a 4-1 late run, but IPFW would take game one, 30-22.
Game two was a much closer affair to start, before Eastern Kentucky would take a short lived lead at 17-18. IPFW rallied back, tying the game at 21, and taking a two point lead at 26-24. IPFW would go on a 4-2 run to take game two, 30-26.
Game three would be an almost carbon copy of game two. IPFW would take the match, 3-0.
Miller posted a double-double with 15 kills and 10 digs. Her hitting percentage for the match was .300 with two block assists.
Roehm hit double-digits with 11 kills at a .229 clip. She had two service aces and two block assists.
Patricia Azevedo just missed double-digit kills with nine at a .400 hitting percentage. She dug seven balls in the match.
Jessica Dominiak dished out 41 assists and seven digs. Peachy Jankowski had 18 digs.
For EKU, Amanda Wilson had 12 kills. Ashley Bayer had a double-double with 10 kills and 11 digs. Brittany Nobilio had 22 digs while Kate Hendle had 40 assists.
IPFW v. Western Michigan
The Mastodons faced host Western Michigan in the final match of the Clarion Classic. The Broncos defeated IPFW, 3-1 (23-30, 32-30, 30-32, 26-30).
The Broncos started game one with an 11-5 lead. The Mastodons slowly started to chip away at Western Michigan's lead, but the Broncos held on, 23-30.
Game two was a close affair, with IPFW taking a two point lead at 19-17. The Broncos would claw their way back, taking a two point lead of their own at 26-28. IPFW would go on a 6-2 run to take game two, 32-30, on a kill by Roehm.
Game three would start off on the Broncos side, taking a 10-4 lead. IPFW would fight back, tying the match at 24. It would be a back and forth battle from that point with the Broncos taking game three, 30-32.
The Mastodons kept game four close to start before WMU took a three point lead at 12-15. IPFW would try to cut away at Western's lead, cutting it by 2 at the 22-24 mark. The Broncos would take the match, 26-30.
Schlindwein led IPFW with 17 kills, a personal best with a .261 hitting percentage. She added five digs and a block solo in the four game match.
Miller had a double-double of 15 kills and 11 digs. She added five block assists.
Roehm was close behind with 13 kills and two service aces. At the net she had one block solo and three block assists.
Jankowski dug 27 balls while Dominiak and Shannon Reuter both spent time as the setter, dishing out 29 and 21 assists respectively.
Western had four Broncos in double-digit kills. Katie Eberling had 23 kills and 14 digs. Michelle Moore added 20 kills while Sam Viox had 23 digs and 62 assists.
The Mastodons (3-4) will host the 8th IPFW Invitational on September 7 and 8. Lehigh, Lipscomb and Chicago State will all head to Fort Wayne for the invitational. IPFW opens play at 7 pm on Friday against Lipscomb. The Mastodons will be collecting non-perishable food items at the IPFW Invitational.
