Bradenton, FL - The IPFW Mastodons opened up the spring break portion of their schedule with a rare, 1-1 tie with Western Michigan on Friday at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.
The game was halted after 12 innings due to storms that blew through the Bradenton area.
The Broncs got on the board in the second inning. Sophomore first baseman Matt Ambro led off the inning with a double. He would eventually come home on a sacrifice fly by catcher Kevan Hess.
The Mastodons would tie the contest in the 4th inning. Sophomore shortstop Mark Carden led off the frame with a single. Freshman third baseman Jimmy Gilliland followed that up with a single, moving Carden to third.
Carden would scamper home on a wild pitch from WMU starter Billy Morrison.
It was one of the few mistakes that he, or IPFW starter Cole Uebelhor would make in the game.
Uebelhor pitched 6 2/3 innings of nine-hit ball. He gave up the one earned run while fanning three and walking just one.
Morrison went 7 1/3 innings. He also gave up nine hits. He struck out six 'Dons while walking two.
Both bullpens came on and did good work.
IPFW junior Stacy Herrold tossed 4 1/3 scoreless, giving up five hits, and sophomore Matt Antos retired all four hitters he faced in a scoreless inning.
Gilliland was the hitting star for the Mastodons, going 3-6 in the game.
Ambro and Zach Gentile each had three hit games for the Broncs.
With the tie, IPFW's record stands at 0-4-1 on the young season.
The Mastodons face Northeastern in a twin-bill Saturday at IMG.
