
Big Innings lift Bucknell over IPFW, 8-3

Bradenton, FL - Bucknell University used two big innings to outdistance IPFW, 8-3 this afternoon in the first of two for the Mastodons at the IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida.
Senior starter Ryan VanDriessche was cruising along in this one until the 4th inning. That is when the Bucknell bats came to life.
Back-to-back doubles by right fielder Andrew Brouse and designated hitter Chris Pieper gave the Bison a, 1-0 lead.
After an out, left fielder Austin Turbin hit the third double of the inning, chasing Pieper home.
Center fielder Dane Grandizio stroked the fourth double of the inning, scoring a pair, and the day was over for VanDriessche.
The score would remain, 4-0 until the bottom of the 7th inning.
Bucknell got three more, including doubles six and seven of the afternoon. They finished the game with eight total, a new Bison record.
Trailing 8-0, IPFW got on the board in the top of the 9th inning.
Senior centerfielder Jared Davis and sophomore third baseman Jason Doerffler started off the frame with back-to-back singles.
Davis came home on and RBI single by sophomore second baseman Mark Carden.
Junior catcher Devin Taylor then stepped up to the plate and drilled an RBI double to left scoring Doerffler.
Sophomore designated hitter Ryan Beer rounded out the scoring. He lofted a sacrifice fly to right field. Carden tagged and scored, but Taylor was thrown out at third trying to tag, ending the Mastodon threat.
VanDriessche took the loss, his first of the season. He gave up three runs on six hits, while striking out one and walking three.
Freshman Eric Jarrett got the win for the Bison (4-2-2). He went eight complete, striking out six, walking four, and giving up just three hits.
Junior second baseman Chris Gottschal got two of IPFW's seven hits in the game.
With the loss, the 'Dons are 1-6-1. They return to action tonight against Eastern Kentucky at the IMG Academy.
