Cedar City, UT - Southern Utah scored seven times in the 1st inning but had to hold off a furious IPFW comeback to top the Mastodons, 10-8 in the finale of the four-game series at Thunderbird Park.
SUU got a two-run double from Bucky Aona, but the big blow of the inning came from the bat of right fielder Jacob Romney. Romney drilled a grand slam to left field, and the Thunderbirds took a 7-0 lead.
The Mastodons got one back in the top of the second as left fielder Quentin Brown blasted his second homer of the series to center field.
The 'Dons put up a crooked number of their own in the 3rd inning, all after two outs.
Designated hitter Aaron Kerns singled through the left side to score shortstop Mark Carden.
Brown drove in two more with a double into the left field corner, and then second baseman Scott Micinski plated a pair with a single to left field. After three complete, the Mastodons drew to within one at, 7-6.
The Thunderbirds got one back in the fourth, but a homer from first baseman Shaun VanDriessche in the fifth got the 'Dons back to within one at, 8-7. The home run was VanDriessche's fifth of the season.
Southern Utah catcher Cameron Nelson homered in the fifth and the Thunderbirds took advantage of a pair of IPFW errors in the sixth to increase the lead to 10-7.
Brown drove in his fourth run of the game in the seventh with an RBI single to left, but that is as close as the Mastodons would get, falling 10-8.
SUU starter Jacob Noyes got his second win of the season (2-1), but he did give up seven runs on 10 hits over six innings. He struck out nine Mastodons while walking just two.
IPFW starter Ryan VanDriessche didn't survive the first inning, giving up six runs on four hits.
With the loss, IPFW falls to 6-17-1 and 2-2 in the Summit League.
The 'Dons will step out of conference play for a single nine-inning game at Mastodon Field with Ball State on Tuesday afternoon. Game time is 3:00 p.m.
