
IPFW Drops Pair to UMKC

Kansas City, MO - The IFPW Mastodons (6-14, 1-5 Summit League) dropped the opening pair of games against the UMKC Kangaroos (6-22, 4-9 Summit League), each game ending with a 4-1 score.
The opener started as a pitchers duel, with neither team scoring a run until the Kangaroos put up a pair of runs in the bottom of the fifth inning. The `Dons answered back with a run in the sixth inning when Rachel Staschuk and Abby Liden hit back-to-back doubles, cutting the deficit in half at 2-1.
UMKC added a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth, giving the game its 4-1 final score.
Tara Mickelson went 2-for-3 at the plate, as the team's other three hits came from three different batters. Staschuk picked up the loss, going five inning and allowing four runs on nine hits while striking out four.
In the afternoon finale, the `Dons opened the scoring in the game when Katie Aspegren scored on a passed ball, giving the visitors a 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning. UMKC rallied to tie the score with a run of their own in the bottom of the second inning, before the teams went on a two-inning scoring draught.
The Kangaroos scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to give the hosts a 2-1 lead, before tacking on two more in the sixth go push the game to its 4-1 ending.
Aspegren, Liden, Mickelson, Ty Lambert and Ava Hall each had hits in the second game, Mickelson's and Lamberts coming in just two at-bats. Amanda Olender pitched the entire six innings for the `Dons, giving up a dozen hits and three earned runs.
The teams take back to the diamond tomorrow, starting at 12:00 PM CST.
