Kansas City, MO - The IPFW Mastodons avoided a Summit League sweep by UMKC, topping the Kangaroos 3-0 in the final contest of the three-game conference series.
Sophomore Kayla Powell improved her record to 2-2 on the season after pitching seven strong innings, scattering four hits and striking out three.
The `Dons reached the scoreboard for the first time in the game when Rachel Staschuk hit her second home run of the season in the third inning, driving in herself and Jil Price, who reached via a bunt single a batter earlier.
After seeing an empty fourth inning, Price reached on a Kangaroo error, stole second base and then scored on the hosts' second error of the inning, giving the game its 3-0 final score.
UMKC threatened to reach the scoring column with runners in scoring position in the fourth and seventh innings; however, a pair of IPFW double plays in the game helped eliminate a pair of UMKC baserunners.
The `Dons recorded just four hits in the game, as Price, Staschuk, Kristina Karpun and Ava Hall each reached base via a hit. Price scored two of the three runs in the game, with Staschuk driving in a pair, including the game-winner.
IPFW takes to the road on Tuesday, April 8 as the squad travels to Muncie, Indiana to face off in a pair of games against the Cardinals of Ball State University before hosting Valparaiso a day later for two more games, with the first pitch for both each series set for 3:00 p.m.
