Fort Wayne, IN - The IPFW (16-22, 8-8 Summit League) softball team dropped their regular season and home finale to the Ladies of Centenary (34-24, 17-7 Summit) by a 9-3 score on a sunny Saturday afternoon.
The first five innings were a game of matching scores, with neither team reaching the scoreboard through the opening two frames. Centenary opened the scoring with a pair of runs in the third inning, with the Mastodons answering back with two of their own on a pair of unearned runs, the first run coming in when Tara Mickelson walked with the bases loaded, scoring Sarah Swanson. Kristina Karpun followed with a single to left field, chasing home pinch runner Katy Stephens.
After a scoreless fourth inning, the Ladies once again reached the scoring column of the scoreboard on a solo home run, opening a 3-2 lead, only to see IPFW answer with a run of their own. The `Dons scored when Beatrice Pedraza singled to left field, with the Centenary left fielder misplaying the ball, allowing Karpun to score an unearned run from first base.
The sixth and seventh inning saw the visitors score six unanswered runs, putting up four runs in the sixth and two more in the seventh to give the game its 9-3 final score.
Abby Liden went a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, with Karpun going 2-for-4, with the pair totaling five of the team's nine hits. Karpun scored and drove in a run, with the team's other RBI and other two runs scored were by three different players. Kayla Powell was saddled with the loss, pitching the entire seven innings, striking out five while scattering ten hits and allowing eight earned runs.
The `Dons next take to the diamond in Cedar City, Utah in the Summit League Tournament where IPFW secured the third seed of the nine-team conference. IPFW will face off in the first round against tournament host Southern Utah on May 9, with the first-pitch time still to be announced.
