
Mastodons Take Series Opener over South Dakota State, 5-2

Fort Wayne, IN - IPFW junior starter Brandon Knowling improved to 7-0, and sophomore second baseman Scott Micinski went 4-4, as the Mastodons took the opening game of this weekend's Summit League Series with South Dakota State, 5-2 at Mastodons Field.
Knowling went 8.0 innings, giving up two runs on six hits. He struck out five and didn't walk a Jackrabbit in the contest.
IPFW opened the scoring in the 3rd inning as junior catcher Devin Taylor scored on an RBI double from center fielder Jared Davis. It was Davis' 17th double of the year.
The Mastodons made it 3-0 in the 5th inning on RBI singles from freshman right fielder Garrett Segraves and sophomore third bagger Jason Doerffler.
The 'Dons plated another pair in the sixth on singles from sophomore DH Ryan Beer and Micinski.
Micinski, a late addition to the starting lineup, paced the Mastodon offense with his four-hit outburst.
IPFW also got three hits from Davis and Segraves as part of their 16-hit attack. Davis also stole a pair of bases in the game.
South Dakota State (20-23, 7-7 SL) finally got to Knowling in the top of the 8th inning on a two run double from shortstop Korby Mintken.
Junior reliever Tyler Baatz came on to pitch a 1-2-3, 9th inning for his first save on the season and a final score of, 5-2.
With the win, IPFW improves to 13-31-1 and 9-12 in The Summit League.
The two teams will play a twin-bill Saturday afternoon beginning at 1:00 p.m.
