Fort Wayne, IN - After dropping an 8-6 decision in Game 1 of Saturday's Summit League double header, red shirt junior starter Stacy Herrold threw a three-hit shutout at South Dakota State in Game 2 as the Mastodons would win, 2-0 for a twinbill split.
Herrold fanned three Jackrabbits and walked just one in seven innings of work.
He was carried to the win by a pair of home runs.
In the 4th inning, IPFW got on the board as senior center fielder Jared Davis blasted his seventh homer of the season, out of left field off of SDSU starter Jared Koch.
In the fifth, it was sophomore third baseman Jason Doerffler tacking on an insurance run with his first career home run, and that was all the offense that Herrold would need.
Herrold worked out of a jam in the 6th inning and posted a 1-2-3 seventh for his second win of the season.
In the opener, IPFW got on the board in the bottom of the first inning on back-to-back doubles by catcher Devin Taylor and Davis.
But, South Dakota State would tally three times in the top of the second and once in the top of the third to take a 4-1 advantage.
In the bottom of the third, IPFW broke out the long ball. Freshman right fielder Garrett Segraves drilled a one-out, solo shot to left. It was Segraves' third bomb of the season.
Taylor kept the inning going with his second double of the contest. He trotted home as first baseman Shaun VanDriessche went yard off of SDSU starter Caleb Thielbar to tie the game at four.
South Dakota State (21-24, 8-8 SL) would respond with two in the fourth and single runs in the seventh and eighth to take an 8-4 lead.
VanDriessche cut the lead to 8-5 with an RBI single in the bottom of the eight, and sophomore left fielder Ryan Beer brought a run home in the bottom of the ninth with an infield ground out, but that is all the 'Dons could muster in the 8-6 loss.
Senior starter Cole Uebelhor fell to 0-7. He gave up six runs (five earned) on 10 hits.
Thielbar improved to 5-3 by going 7.1 innings, giving up five runs on eight hits. He struck out six Mastodons and walked none.
SDSU reliever Kirby Morsching came on to pitch an inning and two-thirds for his seventh save of the season.
With the split, IPFW stands at 14-31-1 and 10-13 in Summit League action.
After dropping seven straight against the Jackrabbits, IPFW has now won two of the last three played between the two teams.
The finale of the conference series will be played, weather permitting, on Sunday afternoon at noon.
