Fort Wayne, IN - IPFW junior starter Brandon Knowling lost for the first time in 2008, and the Mastodons left 14 runners on base, in a 3-2 loss to Summit League leading Oral Roberts on Thursday afternoon at Mastodons Field.
Knowling (7-1) gave up three runs on eight hits before leaving after 6.2 innings.
IPFW had staked Knowling to a 2-0 lead. In the 1st inning, first baseman Shaun VanDriessche laid down a perfect squeeze bunt. The bunt was so good that VanDriessche reached safely and scored right fielder Garrett Segraves.
In the second, the Mastodons took advantage of pair of Golden Eagle errors to score an unearned run.
Oral Roberts (40-12, 21-4) got on the board in the third inning on an RBI single from catcher Ben Petralli.
The Golden Eagles got a pair in the fourth. One coming on a solo home run from first baseman David Genao, his eight of the season. The other tally came on an RBI double by Pat Murray.
ORU starter Michael Jarman made it hold up, but had to work out of a number of jams in the game, none bigger than a bases loaded, no-out situation in the fifth.
Jarman gave up two runs (unearned) on eight hits in nine innings of work. He struck out nine and walked two to improve to 10-2.
With the loss, IPFW's hopes of making the Summit League tournament are all but gone. The Mastodons are currently 14-33-1 and 10-14 in league play. They host ORU again on Friday for a 1:00 p.m. double header.
