
`Dons Fall in Three to UALR

Springfield, MO - In the first match of the Dr. Mary Jo Wynn Invitational, hosted by Missouri State University, a tournament that had a last-minute addition of Arkansas-Pine Bluff due to Hurricane Ike, the IPFW Mastodons fell in three to the Trojans of the University of Arkansas-Little Rock (UALR) by scores of 25-22, 25-21 and 25-17.
Senior setter Jessica Dominiak narrowly missed a rare triple-double, as she ended the contest with 26 assists, seven kills and eight digs. Freshman Ashley Dillon led the team in kills with 11 kills, while Taryn Parker chipped in seven. Rebekah Roehm picked up a team-best 11 digs, with Jamie Schwartz adding eight. Parker also had three blocks to lead the team.
The `Dons jumped out early in the opening set, using kills from Parker and Roehm to claim an early 2-0 lead before the Trojans scored the ensuing four points to push ahead 4-2. UALR would not relinquish their lead for the remainder of the set, and led by as many as eight at 18-10 before IPFW mounted a comeback, scoring seven of the next nine points to climb to within three at 20-17. The closest the `Dons would come the rest of the way would be two, as they closed to within a pair on three occasions, 21-19, 22-20, and 24-22 before UALR ended the set on a kill by Anita Bucur.
Kills were evenly divided in the first set, with Roehm, Parker, and Dillon each totaling three, while Mayara Schlindwein and Dominiak had two apiece. Roehm, Dillon and Dominiak each had a shre of the team lead with two digs, with the setter dishing out nine assists.
The second set was a closer battle from the onset, with IPFW jumping ahead by as many as three points at 9-6 following an attack error by the Trojans. UALR fought back to tie the set at 12 in the battle of the acronym schools, as the score was again tied at 13, 15, 16, 17, and 18 before the Trojans used a 4-1 run to take a 21-19 lead, one that they would not relinquish for the remainder of the set, winning by a 25-21 score.
IPFW's second-set statistical leader was Dillon, who had five kills in the frame, with Dominiak and Jessica Miller each adding three. Dominiak dished out nine assists to lead the `Dons, while Roehm picked up six digs.
In the third, and eventual final, set, UALR jumped ahead early at 5-2, and never let go of their lead, despite the `Dons closing to within one at 12-11. The Trojans, ahead by one, opened a 5-0 run, jumping ahead by six at 17-11, as the IPFW deficit never got closer than four the rest of the way in the 25-17 Trojan victory.
UALR was led by Anita Bucur who had 16 kills, with Amilia Barakovic chipping in 14. Setter Guiliana DeFrancesco dished out 47 assists, while Becky Mann (14), Barakovic (12) and DeFrancesco (12) had double figure digs in the victory.
The `Dons take to the court again tonight at 8:00 PM Central Time, where they face tournament host Missouri State University.
