Indianapolis, IN – The IPFW Mastodons erased a 13-point second half deficit, but could not absorb a late Butler run, as the host Bulldogs won 65-57 in non-conference action at the Hinkle Fieldhouse on Wednesday evening.
Stephanie Rosado scored a season-high 17 points, while pulling down 10 rebounds and blocking six shots in the losing effort. The six blocks are tied for the third most in a single game in IPFW women’s basketball history. Jordan Zuppe added 15 points, while Eva Ivanova added 10, all in the second half, after missing the majority of the first 20 minutes because of foul trouble.
IPFW jumped ahead early, leading by as many as six at 14-8 with 10:36 to play in the opening period. The host Bulldogs rallied back, using a 16-4 run over the final 8:36 to turn a five-point IPFW lead into a seven-point Butler advantage, as the hosts led 28-21 after the initial 20 minutes of game play.
Butler scored eight of the first 10 points of the second half to increase their lead to 13, and led by 11 after a pair of Susan Lester free throws with 14:58 to play in the game. The Mastodons proceeded to fun off a 14-2 run over the next five minutes, capped by a Rosado three-point basket that gave IPFW a one-point, 43-42 lead with just under ten minutes remaining in the game.
The Bulldogs answered with four straight points, all on free throws, giving the hosts a lead that they would not give up for the remainder of the game. The ‘Dons trailed by two after a three-point basket by Courtney Reed as the shot-clock buzzer went off, but that would be as close as IPFW would come, with Butler iced the game by hitting 6-of-9 free throws down the stretch, as a Zuppe lay-in as time expired gave the game its final score of 65-57.
Chelsey Jackson scored six points and dished out a team-best four assists in limited action because of foul trouble, with Reed and Zuppe each dishing out three. Reed added three steals in the losing effort.
Brittany Bowen had 17 points for Butler, with Susan Lester picking up a 16-point, 14-rebound double-double. Chloe Hamilton pulled down 11 rebounds, as Terra Burns dished out six assists.
The Mastodons regroup as they head to Evanston, Illinois, for a match-up with the Big Ten Conference’s Northwestern Wildcats, with tip-off slated for 4:30 PM EST at Welsh-Ryan Arena.
