Edwardsville, IL – Senior forward Deilvez Yearby scored a game-high 21 points as IPFW won on the road, 69-64 at Southern Illinois University Edwardsville on Tuesday night in non-conference action at the Vadalabene Center.
In a game that changed leads seven times and had six ties, it was the Mastodons who had enough to reach the finish line.
IPFW controlled most of the first half, but trailed at the break as senior guard Stephen Jones completed an old-fashioned three-point play making it 36-33.
Coming out at half-time, Yearby scored eight points to draw the ‘Dons to within one at 47-46.
Yearby, however, would get into foul trouble, getting his third with 12:57 left. In stepped sophomore forward Trey McCorkle. He posted up on the front line of the Cougars and dropped in three quick baskets to give IPFW a five-point lead at 57-52.
SIUE would charge back and on a dunk by Nikola Bundalo took a 61-60 edge with 4:21 left.
Yearby, after a stellar effort, fouled out with 2:11 remaining and the score tied at 62.
McCorkle and Cougar forward Mark Yelovich traded baskets to make it 64-all.
With just :33 left, it was McCorkle finding Nick Daniels deep on the baseline. The senior fired one up from 3-point land and ripped the cords to give the ‘Dons a 67-64 lead. Daniels would then pull down a rebound off of a Yelovich miss and sink two free throws to seal the win for IPFW.
The Mastodons got strong efforts from a number of players in the win. Yearby’s 21 included a nine rebound effort. Junior guard Ben Botts had 11 points and Daniels finished with 10, none bigger than his five at the end of the game.
Junior forward Antwone Snead owned the glass. He hauled down a game-high 14 rebounds. Junior guard Zach Plackemeier had nine and six assists, while McCorkle finished with eight.
Yelovich led SIUE (0-6) with 15 points. Senior guard Aamir McCleary added 14 while sophomore guard David Bourden came off the bench to add 10.
The Mastodons (2-3) outrebounded the Cougars 43-29. IPFW also hit 45.3% from the floor.
The ‘Dons will now return home for only the second time this season to host Oakland on Saturday night at the Coliseum. Game time is 7:00 p.m. and will be the Summit League opener for both teams. The night will begin with a women’s contest at 4:30 p.m. It is also homecoming.
