Louisville, KY - The 2009 NCAA Tournament Runner-up Louisville Cardinals were too much for the IPFW Mastodons, as the Cardinals dominated in the paint in a 91-62 outcome. Louisville out-scored IPFW 52-18 in the paint, and 35-to-16 in second chance points in the IPFW loss.
Stephanie Rosado and Chelsey Jackson each scored 11 for the `Dons, as Anne Boese added 10, and Sydney Weinert narrowly missed her third straight double-figure scoring game with nine. Point guard Courtney Reed pulled down a team-best six rebounds, with Eva Ivanova and Laura Gerhardt each grabbing five off of the bench. Chelsey Jackson dished out a career-high six assists, as Jordan Zuppe and Ivanova each had a pair of steals.
The host Cardinals jumped ahead early, leading by seven at 14-7, before IPFW countered with an 8-0 run from a pair of free throws by Jackson, back-to-back baskets by Weinert, and an Ivanova jumper to give the Mastodons their first lead of the game at 15-14.
Louisville got a pair of free throws from Gwen Rucker before Rosado and Jackson scored back-to-back buckets to give the Mastodons a three-point, 19-16 lead halfway through the opening period.
The Cardinals responded with a 9-1 run to take a 25-20 lead, before IPFW answered back again, cutting the deficit to one at 27-26 following a long Jackson three-point basket with 6:58 remaining in the first half.
A 14-1 run gave Louisville a 41-27 lead four minutes later, and trailing by 16, at 46-30, IPFW used a three from Jordan Zuppe and a lay-in by Jackson to drop the deficit to 11, before Ashley Rainey hit a lay-up with two seconds left to send the hosts into the locker room with a 48-35 lead.
IPFW cut the deficit to a dozen following Boese's first three-point basket of the game at 18:48, cutting the deficit to 50-38; however, a 6-0 run for Louisville followed, as the Mastodons would not be able to get within single digits the rest of the way in the 91-62 Cardinal win.
Keshia Hines and Monique Reid, the Louisville starting posts, had 19 and 18 points, respectively, while pulling down eight and 13 rebounds, apiece. Shelby Harper added 12 points for the Cardinals.
IPFW resumes their Summit League season on Saturday, January 2 when the team plays host to the Leathernecks of Western Illinois University, with tip-off slated for 4:30 PM at the Memorial Coliseum.
