Kissimmee, FL - For the first time during their trip to the Rebel Spring Games this season, the IPFW Mastodons were dropped in both of their games of the day, falling 2-0 to Bucknell, and 2-1 to South Dakota.
In the first game, against Bucknell, both teams struggled to find the scoring column, before the Bison first accomplished the feat in the top of the sixth inning when Jane Messersmith hit into a fielder's choice; however, Heather Genovese's throw to catcher Kristina Karpun went awry, allowing Lauren Trosch to score, before Brittany Schlorff was thrown out on the return throw to the plate.
The final run came in the bottom of the seventh when Lauren Fry doubled in Ashley Carlson, giving the game its 2-0 final score.
The `Dons were held to just four hits in the game, one each from Rachel Staschuk, Cassie Wolfe, Stacey Swinford, and Jil Price.
Amanda Olender picked up the loss, pitching for IPFW in the sixth inning, allowing just the one unearned run. Rachel Staschuk pitched the remaining six innings, scattering four hits, allowing one run, while striking out three and walking two.
In the second game against South Dakota, the Coyotes got their first run of the game on a fourth inning leadoff home run, giving the hosts on the scoreboard a 1-0 lead. The Mastodons were not able to counter until the top of the seventh inning when Bea Pedraza doubled to left center, and then due to errors by the Coyotes' outfield, scored on the same play.
Facing extra innings, the Coyotes responded with a run in the bottom of the seventh inning when Tagney Jones singled before Callie Roan scored when the Mastodon shortstop mis-threw the ball, giving up the game-winning run.
Sarah Swanson was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate in the loss, with Price and Pedraza each recording one of the team's other two hits.
Courtney Cronin recorded her first collegiate loss, pitching all seven innings with a career-high nine strikeouts, walking just two.
The `Dons, now 3-5 on the season, take back to the diamond tomorrow afternoon when they play Youngstown State at 1:00 PM, and Robert Morris at 5:00 PM.
