Indianapolis, IN - The IPFW Mastodons could not hold on to a 6-5 lead in the bottom of the ninth and fell to Butler University, 7-6 on Wednesday afternoon at Bulldog Park.
The Mastodons seemed to have it on cruise control through the first four innings of the ballgame.
IPFW got four runs in the 2nd inning on two-RBI doubles from left fielder Ryan Beer and second baseman Jordan Kohler.
The 'Dons got a pair in the fourth on an RBI groundout from first baseman Ryan VanDriessche and RBI single from third baseman Mark Carden.
But that is all the scoring the Mastodons would muster in the contest.
Butler (3-16) got two back in their half of the fourth on a sacrifice fly and a pair of IPFW errors.
The Bulldogs got two more in the 6th inning on an RBI single to center off the bat of center fielder Colin Ziegel.
Butler would pull to within one in their half of the 8th inning on Ziegel's third RBI of the afternoon, setting up an exciting 9th inning.
IPFW reliever Scott Micinski started off the frame by getting the first two Bulldog batters on a strike out and an infield pop-up.
But after a single and two walks, the Bulldogs had the bases loaded. IPFW went to junior reliever Andrew Emge to close it out. Emge got the first two strikes on right fielder Luke Duncan. Emge tried to get Duncan to chase on the next pitch to make the count, 1-2.
Emge's next pitch was drilled back up the box and into center field. Two Butler runners would beat the throw home and the Bulldogs completed their comeback.
BU reliever Tyler Szymczak got the win (1-0). He tossed a scoreless top of the ninth for Butler. He gave up a hit and struck out one in that inning.
Micinski took the loss (0-2). He was responsible for the two runs that scored on the Duncan walk-off single. He gave up those runs on two hits. He walked two and struck out one.
IPFW second baseman Jordan Kohler and right fielder Joel Washko each went 3-4 with and RBI.
With the loss, IPFW falls to 5-12. They will play just their second home game on Saturday, when they host LeMoyne University for a double header.
