Fort Wayne, IN - The IPFW baseball team dropped a pair of extremely close games to LeMoyne College on Saturday afternoon at Mastodon Field.
Game one took 12 innings to decide with the Dolphins winning, 3-1. LeMoyne took the nightcap of the twin-bill, 3-2.
IPFW opened the scoring in the bottom of the first in game one as junior first baseman Shaun VanDriessche doubled to left scoring junior right fielder Joel Washko.
LeMoyne would tie it in the 5th inning an RBI double by left fielder Chris Edmondson.
Both teams left a small village on the base pads in the opener. LeMoyne stranded 15 runners, IPFW 10.
In a game schedule to only go seven innings, LeMoyne broke through in the 12th inning on a Matt Marra RBI double.
LC reliever Tom McDermott, who came on in the 7th inning, got the win. He tossed 5.2 innings of three hit ball. He struck out 10 Mastodons and walked just one.
IPFW reliever Tyler Baatz took the loss (0-2). In 1.1 innings of work, Baatz gave up two runs on three hits. He struck out one and walked one.
In game two, the Dolphins jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the first inning. Two runs crossed as first baseman Chris Haynes singled off the glove of a diving IPFW shortstop Chris Gottschall.
The 'Dons got one back in their half of the first on an RBI single by VanDriessche to left field.
The score remained 3-1 until the 6th inning. Third baseman Jordan Kohler led off the frame with a double to left field. He advanced to third on a single by Gottschall. Kohler would come home as LC starter Luke Nellis air-mailed a pick-off attempt of Gottschall at first base.
However, Nellis settled in nicely and didn't run into any more trouble until the bottom of the seventh.
Nellis walked catcher Devin Taylor and gave up a single to right fielder Scott Micinski.
With two away, LeMoyne went to the pen for freshman closer Derek Zielinski. He got Kohler to ground out to short to end the ballgame.
Nellis got the win (1-2). In 6.2 innings, he gave up two runs (one earned) on five hits. He struck out seven and walked four.
IPFW starter Stacy Herrold was the tough-luck loser (1-2). He tossed a complete game four-hitter. He struck out two while walking one.
With the wins, LeMoyne improves to 6-13. IPFW fell to 5-14.
The series finale is scheduled for Sunday at noon, weather permitting.
