Fort Wayne, IN - The IPFW Mastodons swept their first opponent of the 2009 season, topping the IUPUI Jaguars in a pair of games on Friday afternoon, winning the opener 7-2 before prevailing in the nightcap 5-0.
Sophomore pitcher Rachel Staschuk pitched a gem in the second game, scattering just two hits and walking three in picking up her first shutout of the 2009 season. She helped her cause in the finale with a solo home run to lead off the third inning, her first home run of the season.
IPFW (9-10, 3-3 Summit League) never trailed on the day, jumping ahead 1-0 in the first game in the bottom of the second inning when Kaylee Faurote reached on a fielder's choice, as IUPUI third baseman Alicia Hayes' throw home was not in time to throw out Beatrice Pedraza, pushing IPFW ahead 1-0. An inning later Cassie Wolfe scored when Pedraza reached on an error.
The Jaguars (3-27, 1-7 Summit League) cut the deficit in half with a run in the top of the fourth inning, before IPFW tacked on a pair of runs in their half of the inning when Kristina Karpun drew a bases loaded walk, scoring Faurote, before Amanda Olender hit into a groundout, scoring Staschuk.
After IUPUI scored again in the fifth inning, the `Dons added three insurance runs in the sixth, the first when Stacey Swinford scored following a fielding error, before Price and Pedraza drove in Wolfe and Karpun, respectively.
Staschuk was 3-of-4 at the plate in the game, while Wolfe was 2-for-4. Faurote, Sarah Swanson, Karpun, Olender, and Pedraza each recorded a hit, with Wolfe scoring twice, and Pedraza driving in a pair.
Freshman pitcher Courtney Cronin pitched the entire seven innings, giving up just four hits two runs, both unearned while striking out a pair.
The Mastodons wasted little time in the second inning to push ahead for good in the contest, when Faurote drove in Swinford and Pedraza, giving the hosts a quick 2-0 advantage.
Staschuk and Karpun each hit solo home runs in the bottom of the third inning, before Pedraza scored on a bases-loaded wild pitch, to give the game its 5-0 final score.
Just once did IUPUI put a runner past second base in the nightcap, as Staschuk was remarkable, pitching the entire seven innings for her first collegiate shutout. She struck out three, and walked two, while scattering the two hits.
At the plate, Swinford was 2-for-3, with Faurote, Staschuk, Karpun, Pedraza and Heather Genovese each recording a hit. Pedraza scored twice, while Faurote drove in a pair.
The `Dons look to even their record on the season on Saturday afternoon at noon, as the teams will compete in the final game of their Summit League three-game series.
