Conway, SC - A three-run homer by Stony Brook senior right fielder Michael Tansey sent IPFW to its fifth straight loss Saturday night at the Carvelle Resort Classic. The Seawolves got past the Mastodons 6-3.
IPFW got on the board first in this one, as second baseman Jason Doerffler brought home shortstop Jordan Kohler with an RBI double to left field.
Stony Brook tied the game in the top of the 4th inning on an RBI single from senior shortstop Keith Fier.
That was the only run that IPFW starter A.J. Risedorph surrendered until running into trouble in the fifth.
After a leadoff walk to center fielder Brian Witkowski, the Seawolves sacrificed him to second. The 'Dons countered with an intentional walk to set up the force. It looked like IPFW would get out of the inning as Risedorph struck out first baseman Robert Dyer for the second out of the inning.
Unfortunately, Tansey would not let the Mastodons off the hook. His three-run homer gave Stony Brook a 4-1 lead.
IPFW designated hitter Chris Gottschall continued his torrid hitting in the seventh inning. Gottschall, who is hitting .385, doubled to right center scoring center fielder Garrett Segraves and cutting the lead to 4-2.
But that is as close as IPFW would get. The Seawolves (2-5) added runs in the 8th and 9th innings.
The Mastodons got one in the bottom of the ninth on an RBI single by third baseman Mark Carden to make the final 6-3.
Seawolves' freshman reliever Nick Tropeano tossed four complete for the win (1-0). He struck out five 'Dons while walking two.
Risedorph (0-2) took the loss going 4-2/3 innings. He struck out six 'Wolves while walked four.
IPFW (1-5) will play their final two games of the Carvelle Resort Classic on Sunday. The Mastodons will face UAlbany at 10:00 a.m. and finish off the tournament with Creighton at 5:30 p.m.
