JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - The IPFW men's golf team opened the 2009 season Monday in Jacksonville, Florida, at the North-South Collegiate hosted by Butler University. After 18 holes of play, the Mastodons sit comfortably in seventh place.
IPFW fired a team total of 289 after the first 18 holes, and sit 22 strokes back of first-round leader Florida Gulf Coast, who shot a 267. The event is being played at the par 70, 6425 Jacksonville Beach Golf Club.
The Mastodons were led by senior Patrick Kelley, who fired a team best one-under 69 on day one. Kelley currently sits in a tie for 13th place, and will look to move up the leaderboard on day two.

Sophomore Ryan Olbin started the year nicely with a three-over 73, and is tied for 34th. Senior Hartley Mcleod III, who shot a 75 on day one, made his 2008-2009 debate after sitting out in the fall with an injury. He is currently tied for 47th. Rounding out the day for IPFW was junior Tyler Haire's 81.
Two 'Dons competed individually at the North-South; freshmen Jacob Bailey and Johnny McMillen. McMillen fired a first day 75, while Bailey shot a 76. The two-day, 36 hole event will conclude Tuesday. The forecast for Tuesday calls for sunny skies, with a high of 80 degrees.
