Fort Wayne, IN - The Eastern Michigan University Eagles topped IPFW in a pair of games on Wednesday afternoon, prevailing 2-1 in eight innings in the opening game, before winning the finale 10-2 in six innings.
Kaylee Faurote kept her hitting streak alive in the pair of wins, as the streak now stands at 10 games as she went 2-for-5 on the day with a run scored and two driven in.
In the opener, the `Dons (10-14) quickly reached the scoreboard in the bottom half of the inning when Faurote walked, and then advanced to second base on a passed ball. Sarah Swanson followed with a bunt to the pitcher, that EMU's Jaclyn Caro threw away from the first baseman, allowing Faurote to score from second base on the play.
Eastern Michigan (13-18) countered with a run in the top of the third inning when Jenny Scherer hit a two-out home run, knotting the game at one apiece.
For the next four innings, neither team would be able to reach the scoreboard, until the Eagles' Kaylee Tolliver singled, scoring Heather Han, who opened the inning with an infield single.
IPFW was only able to muster a Kristina Karpun single in their half of the eighth inning, as Eastern Michigan walked away with the 2-1 extra-inning victory.
Each of IPFW's three hits came from different batters, as Faurote, Karpun, and Beatrice Pedraza recorded hits in the game, with Faurote scoring the only run. Courtney Cronin pitched the entire eight innings, allowing just two earned runs while striking out nine in falling for just the third time this season, dropping her record to 6-3 on the year.
The Eagles jumped out quickly in the nightcap, scoring two runs in both the first and second innings, before taking on five in the top of the third to push ahead to a 9-0 lead.
IPFW was held off the scoreboard until Faurote hit a two-out, two-run double, scoring Pedraza and Price, who each reached on errors during the inning, and staving off a five-inning contest.
Eastern Michigan added a run in the top of the sixth on a suicide squeeze, pushing the lead back to eight, as the `Dons threatened to send the game through it's full intended length, as the hosts loaded the bases with one out, before first-game starter Jaclyn Caro came in and struck out the final two batters, ending the game with it's 10-2 final score.
Faurote, Swanson, Karpun, Pedraza, and Price each had hits in the game, with the Faurote two-run double accounting for all of the teams' runs. Amanda Olender picked up the loss, pitching four innings and allowing nine runs, six of those earned, while striking out four. Rachel Staschuk pitched two innings in relief, scattering three hits and giving up an unearned run.
The Mastodons get a one-day hiatus from games, before returning to the IPFW Softball Field for a Summit League series starting on Friday, April 3, as the Kangaroos of UMKC come to town for two games on Friday at 3:00 and 5:00 PM, before concluding the series at noon on Saturday.
