Brookings, SD - The IPFW Mastodons were nearly no-hit in the opening game, before a Cassie Wolfe solo home run in the top of the 11th inning gave the `Dons the second game victory, falling 4-0 in the first game and then winning 4-3 in the nightcap.
An Amanda Olender single with one out in the seventh inning was the only hit allowed by Jackrabbit pitcher Jenna Marston, as the hosts got a single run in both the first and second innings, before adding two more in the sixth to give the game its final score. Courtney Cronin picked up the loss, dropping her record to 7-5 on the season, striking out eight while allowing two earned runs and walking three.
In the nightcap, the Mastodons struck first when Wolfe doubled in Kris Karpun, who reached via a two-out single, giving the `Dons their first runs on the afternoon. IPFW increased their lead in the top of the fourth inning when Jil Price hit into a groundout to the shortstop, chasing home Heather Genovese.
The hosts answered with one of their own in the bottom of the fourth inning before pitcher Rachel Staschuk helped her own cause with a solo home run to right field, pushing the Mastodon lead to 3-1.
The Jackrabbit bats caught fire in the bottom of the sixth inning, as the hosts added a pair of runs, as the teams traded scoreless innings for the next four frames before Wolfe provided the heroics leading off in the top of the 11th. The Jacks threatened in their half of the 11th, putting runners on second and third with two outs, before Ashley Durazo popped up to Genovese at second base to give the Mastodons the split on the afternoon.
Karpun and Wolfe each pounded out two hits, Karpun's on four at-bats and Wolfe's on five, with Staschuk, Amanda Olender, Genovese and Beatrice Pedraza each also picking up base hits in the win.
Staschuk went the entire distance, pitching the 11 innings and giving up 11 hits, three runs (two earned), while striking out eight and walking just two.
The teams meet again tomorrow, for the final contest in their three-game series.
