
Crystal Martinez Sets School 5k Record at Miami (Ohio)

Oxford, OH - Crystal Martinez broke the year-old school record in the 5,000-meter run, held by her twin sister Crystina, running a time of 17:05.80 at the Miami Invitational on Saturday afternoon, taking first place in the process.
IPFW had a group of seven in the event, and that group set four season bests, including the Martinez time, which is the second fastest 5k run in the league this season, and is just over 13 seconds off of the NCAA Regional-qualifying time of 16:52. Alexandra Paul placed third in the field, finishing the 12.5 lap race in a time of 17:58.87, while Kim Matusik ran a time of 18:41.80 placing 19th, with each of the aforementioned pair running their best time of the year. Kayla Sweet (20th/18:50.04), Jessica McNulty (26th/19:13.08), Rachel Schultz (33rd/19:35.67), and Beth Hoekstra (37th/20:24.79) also competed for the `Dons in the event.
Felicia Mondry ran to a second-place finish in the 3,000-meter steeple chase, running a time of 11:14.27, with Sarah Hutchings finishing just behind her with a time of 11:21.95, 17 seconds faster than her previous best this year, placing third overall. Annina Gruber took ninth in the field, crossing the finish line in 13:18.41.
Mondry also competed in the 1,500-meter run, where she ran to a season-best mark of 4:51.44, with Hutchings taking ninth in 4:52.49, also a season best.
Whitney Lane had the highest field-event showing for the Mastodons, taking third in the triple jump with a season-best leap of 10.55 meters (34-feet, 7.5 inches), as she and Jill Edmonds took 30th place in their respective running events, Lane in the 200 (28.33), and Edmonds in the 800 (2:53.37).
Jessica Miller placed in the top 15 in a pair of field events, the javelin, where her throw of 28.49 meters (93-6) placed her ninth with her season-best toss, while also recording another season best in the discus, placing 14th with a distance of 33.72 meters (110-7). Laura Williams also had a pair of top-15 finishes, taking 12th in the javelin with a toss of 27.11 meters (88-11), and 15th in the shot put with a season-best 11.07 meters (36-4).
The `Dons next hit the track as they travel to West Lafayette, Indiana, where they will compete in the Dave Rankin Invitational, hosted by Purdue University on April 18.
