Fort Wayne, IN - IPFW dropped the final two games of their weekend Summit League series with Southern Utah on Easter Sunday at Mastodons Field.
The Thunderbirds took the opener, 4-0 and got the nightcap of the twin bill, 7-5.
The Mastodons were limited to just five hits in Game 1 by SUU starter Ray Wright. Wright walked five and struck out three in raising his record to 1-1 on the season. Thunderbird right fielder Marcus Romano was 2-2 with an RBI and run scored in the opener.
IPFW starter Matt Antos took the loss. In 3.0 innings, he gave up just a run on four hits, but walked four.
In Game 2, the T-birds jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the 3rd inning on RBI singles by Bo Cuthbertson, Bucky Aona, and Matt Sanford.
IPFW got their first run of the game in the bottom of that frame on an infield ground out by right fielder Joel Washko. Catcher Devin Taylor, who walked to lead off the inning, scored the run.
Southern got that run back in the top of the fourth, but IPFW exploded in the fifth.
First baseman Chris Gottschall doubled to left scoring two 'Dons. Then, two more came home on back-to-back doubles by second baseman Jason Doerffler and center fielder Garrett Segraves, tying the game at five.
Southern Utah (16-14, 6-1 SL) would get the big blow of the game in the top of the 7th inning as Freitas launched a shot over the left field wall with a man aboard to make it 7-5.
IPFW had the go-ahead runner at the plate in the bottom of the seventh, but reliever Steve Johnson would get Taylor swinging to end the game.
Johnson got the win (5-3). He tossed 2.1 innings of two-hit ball, walking one and striking out one.
IPFW reliever Scott Micinski took the loss (1-4). He gave up just one hit (the Freitas homer) in two innings of work.
With the loss, IPFW falls to 7-23 and 0-8 in Summit League play. The 'Dons will have non-conference games on Tuesday (Valparaiso) and Wednesday (Dayton) before returning to Summit League play this weekend against Oakland.
