Rochester, MI - The IPFW Mastodons and the Oakland Grizzlies split a pair of 1-0 Summit League shutouts on Wednesday afternoon, with the `Dons winning the opening game, and the Grizzlies in the finale.
Freshman pitcher Courtney Cronin improved to 9-5 on the season by pitching a two-hit complete-game shutout in the opener, as she struck out five and walked just one, picking up her sixth shutout of the season, dropping her ERA to 1.02.
IPFW (14-18, 9-7 Summit League) got the first game's only run in the second inning, when Cassie Wolfe drew a walk, and then was forced out on a Kaylee Faurote groundout. Faurote was advanced to second when Beatrice Pedraza hit one of her two singles in the game, before Cronin helped her own cause with a single to right-center field, scoring Faurote.
Neither team would cross the plate the rest of the way, as IPFW held on for the slim victory.
Both of Oakland's hits came from center fielder Anne Cicchini, as starting pitcher Jessica Granger also went the distance, striking out five and walking one, while allowing the solitary run.
The pitcher's duel continued into the second game, before Oakland (14-23, 7-10 Summit League) pushed a run across when Caitlin Lynch singled to right field with two outs, scoring Angela Righetti, who went 2-for-2 in the nightcap.
Rachel Staschuk picked up the loss in the circle for IPFW, allowing just the one run over four innings of work, while striking out three, with Amanda Olender pitching the final two innings in relief, striking out one while allowing just one hit.
Granger pitched all seven innings in the second game, improving to 11-11 on the year, and becoming Oakland's career wins leader in the process. She struck out nine batters and walked two.
The Mastodons' road trip ends in six days, when the team hosts Butler University in their next games, with the first pitch set for 3:00 PM in the double header against the Bulldogs.
