Shreveport, LA - IPFW junior shortstop Jordan Kohler hit for the cycle and drove in five runs, but two big innings propelled Centenary past IPFW, 11-10 in the series opener for the two on Friday evening at Shehee Stadium.
The win snapped a six-game losing skid for the Gents (24-11, 7-5 SL), while the Mastodons fell to 9-26 and 2-11 in conference play.
IPFW opened the scoring in the game in the top of the first, getting two unearned runs on and RBI single by Kohler and an infield groundout by third baseman Mark Carden.
The Mastodons took a 3-0 lead in the third as Kohler led off the inning with a triple to center field. Second baseman Chris Gottschall brought him home with an RBI sacrifice fly to center.
Centenary roared back to take the lead in the bottom of the fourth as they scored six times on just one hit. The Mastodons did not help themselves at all by walking four, hitting three batters, committing an error, a balk, and a wild pitch.
The Mastodon bats kept them in the ball game. Left fielder Scott Micinski led of the 5th inning with his first homer of the season, drawing the 'Dons to within two at 6-4. Kohler doubled in the inning, but was stranded at third.
Then, in the 6th inning Kohler completed his bid for the cycle with a grand slam to left field, giving IPFW an 8-6 lead.
Unfortunately, IPFW could not hold on to that lead. In the bottom of the seventh, put a five-spot on the board, two coming from a single off the bat of left fielder Travis Levinson and two from a double by right fielder Cliff Shepard.
Trailing 11-8, IPFW made one final comeback in the top of the ninth. Gottschall doubled to left center to start off the frame. He stole third and scored on an RBI single from Carden to center. Carden would come home on a sacrifice fly by centerfielder Garrett Segraves. But, with the tying run aboard, CC reliever Stephen Tromblee struck out the final Mastodon to finish off the game.
Reliever Derek Dalzell threw two innings of no-hit ball for his first win of the season. Tromblee picked up his fourth save.
IPFW reliever Matt Antos took the loss (1-4).
Kohler was 4-5 with five RBI and two runs scored. Gottschall, the reigning Summit League Player of the Week, was 2-4 with an RBI and two runs scored. Segraves was also 2-4.
IPFW and Centenary will play the middle two games of their four-game set on Saturday afternoon.
