Shreveport, LA - IPFW saw an all to familiar trend reappear this afternoon at Shehee Stadium on the campus of Centenary College. The Mastodons has plenty of offense, but continued to struggle with a short-handed pitching staff in dropping a doubleheader to the Gents, 15-9 and 7-3.
Junior designated hitter Shaun VanDriessche hit homer runs five and six on the season in the twin bill.
IPFW had leads in both games, but an injury depleted pitching staff had trouble keeping Centenary off the scoreboard.
The Gents scored 13 runs on seven hits in the second and third innings of Game 1. Left fielder Travis Leverson struck the big blow with a grand slam while Tell Ross drilled a three-run shot.
Along with the VanDriessche homer, IPFW shortstop Jordan Kohler who was fresh off hitting for the cycle on Friday hit his seventh homer of the season. He drove in four runs. IPFW right fielder Joel Washko knocked in three.
In Game 2, VanDriessche staked IPFW to a 2-1 lead with a solo shot in the second.
However, Leverson also had a pair of homers in the doubleheader. His two-run shot in the Gents three-run fifth put the game away.
With the twinbill loss, IPFW falls to 9-28 and 2-13 in conference play. The Gents improve their record to 26-11 and 9-5 in The Summit League.
The finale of the series will be played on Sunday afternoon at noon.
