Shreveport, LA - IPFW starter Sam Walker was dealing for the first five innings of today's series finale with Centenary College, but the Gents knocked Walker out of the game in a six-run 6th inning to top IPFW, 8-1 in the final game of their Summit League series at Shehee Stadium.
Walker gave up just a single run through the first five innings. Centenary right fielder Cliff Shepard led off the 4th inning with a triple to center field. First baseman Tell Ross squeezed him home on the next play to give the Gents a 1-0 lead.
IPFW tied the game in the 5th inning. Left fielder Scott Micinski led off the frame by getting hit with a pitch from CC starter Stephen Tromblee. He would eventually score on a passed ball.
Walker began to tire in the sixth. Designated hitter Michael Tompkins doubled to lead off the inning. After an infield ground out, the 'Dons intentionally walked Ross to put the double play in order. Unfortunately, Walker walked the next batter to load the bases. At that point his day was done, but he was still responsible for the three runners on base.
Junior reliever Andrew Emge got the first batter he faced to ground out to second for the second out of the inning, but a run came across to give Centenary a 2-1 lead.
Emge was then touched up for a two-RBI single by third baseman Morgan Brian, a two-run double by shortstop Ricky Imperiali, and an RBI single by left fielder Travis Leverson.
The Gents added a single run in the seventh for the 8-1 win.
Walker took the loss (0-4). He gave up four runs on five hits in 5.1 innings of work. The sophomore struck out five while walking four.
Tromblee went the distance for his fourth win of the season (4-1). He gave up just the one run on six hits. He fanned six while walking two.
Third baseman Mark Carden and first baseman Shaun VanDriessche registered multiple hit games for the Mastodons who fell to 9-30, 2-14 with the loss. Centenary improved to 27-11 and 10-5 in conference play.
IPFW now steps out of conference play for the final time this season with a Wednesday afternoon game at Ball State. Game time in Muncie, Indiana is 3:00 p.m.
