Fort Wayne, IN - The North Dakota State bats erupted to 17 hits over two games, as the visiting Bison swept the IPFW Mastodons by scores of 7-1 and 3-0.
The opener started as a pitcher's duel, with IPFW's Courtney Cronin and NDSU's Andi Padilla going pitch-for-pitch, with neither team scoring a run for the first four full innings, before the Bison reached the scoreboard with an unearned run, jumping a head 1-0.
Three runs in the top of the sixth pushed the NDSU (27-16, 14-3 Summit League) lead to 4-0, before the Mastodons countered with a run of their own, when Cronin helped her own cause by singling in Cassie Wolfe, who had a one-out single two batters earlier. With the lead cut to three, the Bison tacked on three more runs, before holding the 'Dons scoreless the rest of the way in the 7-1 NDSU win.
Cronin picked up the loss for IPFW (14-20, 9-9 Summit League), dropping her record to 9-6 on the season after striking out seven and walking just two, but allowing six earned runs. Padilla improved to 18-9 on the year, giving up seven hits and walking four while striking out three. Cronin was also the team hitting leader in the contest, as she was a perfect 3-for-3 at the plate, with a run driven in, as Rachel Staschuk was 2-for-4.
The Bison scored quickly in the second game, pushing a run across in the top of the second inning, before the bats for both teams went cold over the next three innings. A Breanna Konz two-out two-run single in the top of the sixth would be all the scoring over the remainder of the game, as NDSU shut out IPFW 3-0 in the nightcap, dropping IPFW to an even 9-9 in Summit League action.
Staschuk and Kaylee Faurote had IPFW's only two hits in the nightcap, as NDSU pitcher Kim Westendorf was nearly unhittable, allowing just the two hits and one walk over the course of seven innings. Staschuk struck out three in seven innings of work, walking just two and scattering seven hits.
The teams meet back tomorrow at the IPFW Softball Field for the third and final game of the series, with the first pitch scheduled for noon.
