Mastodons Finish Eleventh in First Event

Bowling Green, OH- Led by freshman Drew Imel, the IPFW Mastodons men’s golf team finished in eleventh place at the John Piper Invitational hosted by Bowling Green State. Imel fired a 1-over, 73 in the final round.
Green Bay won the team title with a three round total of 864. The Phoenix won the event in a playoff over host Bowling Green, who also posted a 864. Indianapolis came in third place with a 879.
The Mastodons played much better on day two, scoring 11 strokes better in round three than round two. The squad finished the tournament with a 923 (312-311-300).
In his first event for the Royal Blue and White, Imel put the freshman nerves aside, firing a two-day, 54-hole total of 222. He finished the event in 19th place.
Bruno Carvalho fired a 232 (79-78-75) and Tomaz Pinheiro shot a 234 (81-77-76) to finish in 42nd and 51st place, respectively.
Rounding out IPFW's top-five were Ryan Olbin (80-81-76) and Jacob Bailey (79-86-78). Olbin jumped up the leaderboard with a 76 on the second day, finishing tied for 57th place, and Bailey finished round three with a 78, ending the event in a tie for 66th place.
Competing as individuals, Jon Balyeat finished in 51st place with a 232, and Johnny McMillen placed 62nd with a 240.
Bowling Green's Matt Schneider defeated Dayton's Jeff Hodapp in a one-hole playoff to take medalist honors with a 5-under, 211 (72-72-67).
The men’s golf team will tee up next at the Ball State Earl Yesteringsmeirer Invitational on September 28-29. The tournament will be held at the Delaware Country Club in Muncie, Indiana.
