Kansas City, MO - A one-goal halftime lead quickly became four as John Bayron Sosa's hat trick powered the UMKC Kangaroos to a convincing Summit League victory over the IPFW Mastodons, 4-1.
Bayron Sosa got the action started for the 'Roos, with the lone score of the opening period. He found the back of the net on a free kick from the left side of the box, putting his team up 1-0 at the 4:36 mark of the match.
In the seventh and ninth minutes after the halftime break, David Sarabia would set up scores to give his team a 3-0 lead. At the 51:13 mark, he fed Jimmy Simon for his sixth goal of the year and just two minutes later, struck again as he found Bayron Sosa for his second tally of the game.
Bayron Sosa, who entered the match with just three scores all season, wrapped up his hat trick in the game's 62nd minute, as he fired a rocket from just outside the box into the lower left corner of the net.
IPFW would tack one goal on the board in the game's 77th minute as part of a last-ditch comeback effort. Grant Welter found Danny Ly on a sharp cross into the box and Ly beat the UMKC keeper to the far side for the first goal of his Mastodon career.
The 'Dons were outshot 17-9 in the match and managed to get just two shots on goal all night, with one of those coming on the Ly score.
Shari Clarke posted three saves in taking the loss and junior Eric Fluck saw his first action of the season in goal, holding the 'Roos scoreless in his 21 minutes of play in the net.
Max Touloute led the IPFW offense with three total shots.
The loss drops the 'Dons to 2-12-1 overall. They return to action next weekend (Oct. 30) as they face off with Centenary in an 8 p.m. Summit League showdown.
